Fun With Jesus

§ December 29th, 2008 § Filed under Pop Culture, humor, travel § No Comments

Keeping in the Baby Jesus Day spirit we decided to it would be fun to share with you the creepiest theme park in the history of theme parks. This is even creepier than Stalin World, and there you can hang out in Siberian prison camps and ride the death train. “The Great Passion Play theme park is a pint-sized Walt Disney World of American Fundamentalist Christianity.” Oh yeah! Sign me up.

Nerdy Grrl would like to thank K. Tess Gulley of Berkley, CA for this most awesome link.

"Top 10 most annoying Americanisms"

§ December 24th, 2008 § Filed under News, Pop Culture, Uncategorized, humor § Tagged , , § 3 Comments

The Telegraph posted this delightful piece by US editor Toby Harnden. I am not sure if these are truly ‘Americanisms’ or just the universal language of BS. Anyhoo it made my day.

“1. “Happy Holidays.”
Translation: “Merry Christmas but I realise you might be Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Bahai, something even more exotic, agnostic or Godless and I don’t want to offend you.”

2. “Have a Nice Day.”
Translation: “I would like you to have a pleasant time today” or “I hate you” – or anything in between.

3. “You’re welcome.”
Translation: Meaningless Pavlovian response to thank you.

4. “Do the math.”
Translation: “Work it out yourself, stupid.”

5. “Let’s visit with each other.”
Translation: “We should spend time together.”

6. “How are you today?”
Translation: “We mean nothing to each other, but let’s pretend.”

7. “Good luck with that.
“Translation: “You have no chance at all.”

8. “Oh my gosh!”
Translation: “I fear you may feel that taking the Lord’s name in vain is blasphemous.”

9. “Can I use your bathroom?”
Translation: “I would like to use your lavatory.”

10. “Not so much.”
Translation: “That’s completely wrong.” Used on me in classic fashion by a Clinton aide back in February.”

One Last Post Before I Go…

§ December 24th, 2008 § Filed under News, Pop Culture § Tagged , , § No Comments

I love Susannah Breslin, I think her writing is absolutely brilliant, and I try to read her blog The Reverse Cowgirl almost everyday. I briefly mentioned some criticism she was receiving over an American Apparel ad in which some nipples were flashed in, Facebook: Bring the Boobies Back. Oh my god nipples! No! You can only imagine my surprise when I clicked on the above mentioned blog this morning and saw…well you’ll just have to click it to see it for yourself. I am not allowed to post such naughty things here, soon, but not now. Let me just say I can’t think of an ad campaign in the history of ad campaigns that would make me want to buy socks, but, by golly I think I need to go and get me some socks. Yes, socks. Well done American Apparel, well done.

I am the first person to complain about the lack of civil responsibility in today’s society, perhaps this is a good thing.

The photos are from reader I. Hohmann’s series Street Talk. It just goes to show that one can find inspiration in the most random of places.

We also received the coolest key chain by an anonymous source, “Super Piggy” is part of the string doll gang made by Kamibashi (Diablo the Satanic Chicken courtesy of Goats sold separately). These guys are handmade in Thailand using just ONE piece of string. Pretty effing amazing! If pigs aren’t your thing they also have ninjas, snowmen, penguins, and even Frankenstein.

 Happy Holidays from Nerdy Grrl.

Bacon. Morning. Coffee. It’s coffee and it’s bacon. Does life get any better? Now if only we could get me some caffeinated donuts.

Colorado Doctor Finds Foot in Newborn's Brain

§ December 17th, 2008 § Filed under Pop Culture, Science § Tagged , , , , , , , , § 1 Comment

I have seen a lot of nasty and bizarre things in my, but this takes the cake. The Denver Channel is reporting a pediatric surgeon in Colorado discovered a foot growing inside newborn, Sam Esquibel’s brain.
“When Grabb performed the life-saving surgery at Memorial Hospital for Children in Colorado Springs, he was in for another surprise: he also found what appeared to be parts of an intestine in the folds of the infant’s tiny brain, in addition to another developing foot, hand and thigh.”

Hanukkah and Prostates

§ December 17th, 2008 § Filed under News, Pop Culture, television § Tagged , § No Comments

Last night I was watching CBS when one of their CBS Cares PSA’s came on. The topic, Hanukkah and prostate exams. Hmmm? Really? As I was watching it I thought I might be having one of those acid flashbacks that I have read so much about, but then I realized I have never done acid, so it had to be real or the onset of psychosis. My mission, to scour the interweb until I found it, and oh yes I found it.

Here’s the thing. This didn’t just happen. I work in marketing/advertising and know how these things work. There are meetings, discussions, and even sometimes voting. Somewhere out there, there is a group of individuals who thought the best way to support the Jewish community was by doing a Happy Hanukkah prostate exam PSA. WTF?

I can just picture the boardroom now. If you don’t feel like reading my script at least scroll down to the video and have yourself a “kosher prostate”.

Boss: “We are really not connecting with our Jewish audience. We need to let them know that CBS cares about them, their culture. What’s that, that holiday they have? It’s like our Christmas? We should do something for that.”

Chad: “Hanukkah, sir.”

Boss: “Well done Chad! Hanukkah? How the hell do you spell that? Where’s Rosenberg when you need him? Anyway, what can we do to reach out, and get our hooks in them?”

Chad: “How about a PSA on Prostate Exams and Hanukkah?”

Boss: “Brilliant!! Kosher Prostates!”
