Me Pearl’s: PROPER OPOSSUM DENTAL HYGIENE

§ July 26th, 2010 § Filed under Animals § Tagged , , , § No Comments

Earlier this weekend the folks over at Neatorama posted of video from Me Pearl Productions on Proper Opossum Pedicure Procedure. If you don’t read Neatorama, you should, and if you don’t have an opossum, well, quite frankly, you shouldn’t.

After watching the video, I decided to cruise on over to Me Pearl’s website and poke around. What I found horrified, and intrigued me. You can’t stop looking, but you know you should. You’re drawn in, there is something oddly delightful, yet creepy about the whole thing. The woman is mad, absolutely bonkers. She believe she is a reincarnated squirrel, she sell preserves. For Christ’s sake she has a pet opossum that she gives pedicures, and frequent massages. I guess what is most unsettling, is the fact I recognize, this is my future. That it is only a matter of time before I completely lose my mind, start chatting it up with the local wildlife and start a porcupine spa.

Also if you are looking to donate to a NON tax deductible ‘charity’ Pearl has some words of wisdom for you.

You may give to ME for your own personal joy, for the purpose of atonement, to validate your abundance, because it amuses you; you may give to ME for any reason at all with zero expectation of getting anything in return other than the deep satisfaction of having given freely of yourself!

Plus, you will make Pearl happy !

Jessica the Hippo: Living Large in South Africa

§ March 23rd, 2010 § Filed under Animals, Uncategorized § Tagged , , , § No Comments

The two animals I fear most in this world are badgers and hippos (the large ones not the pygmy ones). I do however make an exception for his lil lady. Meet Jessica the Hippo living large (no pun intended) in South Africa with caretakers Tonie and Shirley Joubert. The couple, rescued the young hippo shortly after birth from the banks of the Blyde River, during the devastating floods of 2000. Oh, in case you were wondering “the kitchen is her favorite place to be”. For more information on Jessica click the pink link.

Seal Crasher

This image was posted by Neatorama this morning and I thought I should share it with y’all. I give you Seal Crasher, cuter than a squirrel and less likely to be carrying the bubonic plague. It’s not that I am a squirrel hater. They are cute and all, but the reality is they are disease-carrying rodents. Diseases like the plague. The deadly, deadly, plague. Seals not so much, I don’t recall any documentation regarding seals and the plague. Take that squirrel lovers!

If you haven’t checked out Neatorama you should. It is hands down one of my favorite news sites/blogs/what have you. They have a diverse collection of pieces and a staff of really great writers. They also have an Upcoming Queue which allows readers to submit their work for consideration.

Man Eating Pugs: When Pugs Snack Attack

§ March 12th, 2010 § Filed under Animals, News § Tagged , § No Comments

This just came across my ‘desk’ today.  I know it’s a bit outdated, but it seems in line with the whole sheep eating parrot thing.

Meet Harry and Sally, two man-eating pugs from Nebraska (as if you needed another reason not to visit). The pair was left without adequate food or water after their owner killed himself and resorted to the unsavory snacking as a means of survival. The good news, they appear to be happy and healthy and unscathed by their traumatic ordeal. The bad news, they need homes. So if you don’t mind a little Hannibal Lector in your pug you should give the Nebraska Humane Society a ring.

Sheep Eating Parrots

§ March 12th, 2010 § Filed under Animals, News, Uncategorized, You Tube § Tagged , , , § No Comments

At a recent dinner party my friend from New Zealand and her husband were kind enough to tell me about the infamous sheep eating parrots of her native land. I listened in amazement as they recounted a terrorizing tale of bloodthirsty, nocturnal parrots that hunt in packs searching for their next tasty, meat snack.  “They jump onto the backs of the live sheep pecking through their flesh and drinking their blood. Muhahahaha.”  I thought they were joking until I found the following video.  Beware this is the stuff that nightmares are made of.

I came across this story/photo today in the Telegraph and instantly smiled. Who doesn’t enjoy a couple of rodents with coconuts on their heads.

Jane Robert’s of Fareham, Hants strings the delicious treats up for her furry little friends each week.  ”I make a large hole in the coconut so they can get to the flesh. They cannot get enough of them.  I worry they might get stuck up there one day but they are clever little things.”

Warning the cuteness that follows may cause one to gasp, ooh, and ahh out loud, this may or may not be embarrassing depending on your current location.

Ladies and Gents let me introduce you to Koda, Australia’s smallest horse. Koda is an American Miniature, suffering from dwarfism. Yup, apparently horses can also suffer from dwarfism.

Science Tuesday: Dwarf Dinos, Polar Twins, And Fatherless Whiptail Lizards

§ February 23rd, 2010 § Filed under Animals, News, Science, Uncategorized § Tagged , , , , § No Comments

There were so many interesting articles today I had trouble picking one to write about. I decided to compile a list of excerpts with links so you could choose for yourself.

Scientific America: Same Species, Polar Opposites: The Mystery of Identical Creatures Found in both Arctic and Antarctic Waters
“Two years ago, several research vessels shipped out to the North and the South poles to assemble a census of creatures living under the ice. One of the most surprising results was a discovery that 235 identical species lived on opposite sides of the world but were undocumented anywhere else. It’s easy to understand how massive humpbacks can swim from Arctic to Antarctic waters, but most of the miniature worms, snails and crustaceans on the researchers’ list are no bigger than grains of rice…. ”

Telegraph.UK Dwarf Dinosaurs Did Exist
“A favourite theme of evolutionary ecologists is whether there is an ”island rule” – where large animals isolated on islands evolve to become smaller.
Three species of the Hateg dinosaurs – the plant-eating sauropod Magyarosaurus and the plant-eating ornithopods Telmatosaurus and Zalmoxes – are half the length of their nearest relatives elsewhere…”

NYT Who’s Your Daddy? Genetic Diversity in Fatherless Whiptail Lizardsa

“More than 40 years ago, Bill Neaves, then a young Ph.D. student, discovered how an all-female, asexual species of the whiptail lizard came to be. He found that the lizard was a cross between the female species of one type of lizard and the male species of another.
But what has puzzled him for years is how this all-female species maintains its high level of genetic variation, a contribution to evolutionary fitness that typically comes from sexual reproduction.”
