A panel of Cassini (NASA) scientists, presented findings at today’s American Geophysical Union fall meeting that Saturn’s moon Enceladus has similar geological processes to Earth. Think way back to Geo 101, and plate tectonics, and spreading centers, well that’s what we are talking about here. “Enceladus has Earth-like spreading of the icy crust, but with an exotic difference — the spreading is almost all in one direction, like a conveyor belt,” said panelist Paul Helfenstein, Cassini imaging associate at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. “Asymmetric spreading like this is unusual on Earth and not well understood.” I won’t go into too much detail for the non sciencey folks, but for those of you who get as excited as I do over spreading centers this article is a must read.
